Barn Burning (Justice of the Peace)

Aus WikiSchool

A Justice of the Peace is a respected citizen who gets the trust of his community to take on special responsibilities.

In the first scene of the novel the Justice leads the trial. Although he can't prove that Abner Snopes burned the barn from Mr. Harris he gave him the advice to leave the country and never come back. But this advice is as good as an judgement. If Abner would not leave the town, he would be bullied out by the other citizens.

Appearance: He is a shabby, colarless, graying man in spectacles (p.5, l. 6 -7)

Later in the novel there is an other Justice of the Peace. At this time Abner is the plaintiff and not the accused. The result of this trial is that Abner has to pay ten instead of twenty bushles of corn for the destroyed rug.

About the appearance of this Justice don`t know anything.
