Barn Burning (Major de Spain's house)
Aus WikiSchool
[bearbeiten] Environment
The house of Major de Spain is placed on a huge estate.
A "grove of oaks and cedars and other flowering trees and shrubs" (p. 14, line 5-6) hides the house itself from the visitor's view.
The estate is bordered by a "fence massed with honeysuckle and Cherokee roses" (p. 14, line 8-9) with a "gate between two brick pillars" (p. 14, line 9-10). After entering through that gate, a "sweep of drive" (p. 14, line 10) finally leads the viewer to the house itself.
[bearbeiten] Outer House
Before the entrance, the house has a "hollow portico" (p. 23, line 3) and the main door is white (p. 16, line 11) as the whole house seems to be.
Sartory is really impressed by the house because in his opinion, it is "big as a Courthouse" (p. 14, line 18). Sarty had never seen a house of such a size and it gives him a feeling "of peace and joy" (p. 14, line 19). Sarty thinks that even his father can´t destroy this peace.
With its "calm backdrop" (p. 15, line 10) and the "atmosphere of peace and dignity" (p. 14, line 21-22), the house looks to Sarty as if "its residents were superior to the anger of his father" (p. 14, line 21-22).
