[bearbeiten] Look
He´s a small boy, who is too small for his age. He has straight, uncombed brown hair and gray eyes. He doesn`t have new clothes because his family is really poor and they can`t afford new clothes. He wears patched and faded jeans which are even too small for him. He is ten years old.--Pibs 12:53, 17. Jan. 2007 (CET)
[bearbeiten] Personality
It seems like he can´t read, so he probably never went to school - maybe because it´s too expensive or because he and his family never stayed too long at one place or his father thinks that going to school is unnecessary because he had to work as a farmer anyway.
He´s afraid of his father because sometimes he was beaten up by him. He`s a good son because he helps his family where he can. But on the other hand, he is kind of forced to help his family because his father always threatens him that the family has to stick together.
I think Sarty is addled. On the one hand, he wants to help his familiy and wants to be like his father, but on the other hand he can´t accept what his father does so he warns and helps Major de Spain, he rebels against his family. It´s very difficult for Sarty, he doesn´t know what he should do, because his father told him “You´re getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain´t going to have any blood to stick you” The problem is, that Sarty is too joung, he can´t arrests the plan of his father, anyway not with violence,he just can warns the victims. I think that shows us the diremption of Sarty.--Üli 16:58, 13. Jan. 2007 (CET)
His inner conflict always depresses Sarty but in the end it's his heart that wins, so he gets over his father's way of thinking and does what he wants to do and follows his own ideas of living. But with warning Major de Spain he destroyed the bridge between him and his family, because even if his mother and sisters would accept him futhermore, his father wouldn't.
What happens further to Sarty, after he stands opposite to his father and left, we don't know.
I think that this question is unnecessay because the father was shoot by Major the Spain (or am I wrong?).
He has no friends and no hobbies ( he has one "hobby", it´s just a thing which he likes to do: he likes to splitting wood with his half-size axe --Üli 17:18, 13. Jan. 2007 (CET)) and he seems to bee a calm and reclusive boy who tries to make all things right that he does.
Sarty has an other good attribute too: he does what he have to do, but he does some things which was beyond, this attribute he has from his mother " during the week he worked steadily at what was within his scope and some which was beyond it, with an industry that did not need to be driven nor even commanedet twice --Üli 17:18, 13. i wouldn´t say that sarty wants to be like his father. i think that his father wanted him to be like himself (the father). Sarty ever knew that his father isn´t rigth all the time...--Noknok 17:19, 17. Jan. 2007 (CET)
From the very begining Sarty is torn between his family and his conscience. During the first trial he sticks with his father. Mr. Harris is not only his fathers enemy it´s his as well. "our enemy (...) ourn! mine and hisn both!" (P.4;L.2) What makes him feel this way is the "old fierce pull of blood" (P.3;L.15) as he calls it. What he means is the strong connection to his family,he feels. It makes him fell like he has to stick to them because they´re the only persons he can relate to. As already told he´s torn between his family ties and his conscience. Growing older and thinking about what his father does he feels more and more uncomfortable with sticking to his fathers actions. He also feels bad about moving around every few weeks. Thats where he starts thinking: "Maybe he´s done satisfied now" (P.9;L.7). Sarty hopes that the serial burning of barns would stop soon. That hope is strengthened when he arrives at Major de Spains house. That place gives him a feeling of peace and dignity. And he admires the people who live there because they are safe form his father. "People whose lives are part of this peace and dignity are beyond his touch" Thats probably what makes him run away. The old pull of blood is not strong enough any more. That´s because his father can´t give him the feeling of peace and digninty, probably not even love. So in the end his conscience takes over the "old pull of blood" --Petra 22:03, 17. Jan. 2007 (CET)
