Major de Spain's black servant has neat grizzled hair and wears a linen jacket. His job is to guard the door and let people in who want to speak to the Major, his employer.

When Abner Snopes wanted to come into the house of Major de Spain, the servant opened him the door and blocked the way. He did this because Abners shoes were dirty with dung and in the lobby there was a white and expensive rug. So the servant just wanted to prevent that Abner pollutes the rug. But Abner flung the servant away and entered the room. The servant couldn't assert himself against Abner.
