Mister Snopes, Colonel Sartoris Snopes' father, wants to introduce himself at a new employer.
He wants to show off as someone you can't fool around with. So he purposedly steps into fresh horse droppings and spreads them in the house of Major de Spain's house on an expensive rug in the entrance hall. This expensive rug is bright, so everybody can see this big fat blot.
Mister Snopes doesn't say anything. The black man is very nervous and cries for Miss Lula, a maid. As she hears the calling, she comes quickly to the other persons. She quickly notices that the rug is dirty from Mister Snopes' shoes and she screams:" Go away, now... Mister Spain isn`t here, go away!!" She is really acrid.
Mister Snopes still says nothing. After a few wordless seconds he leaves the house and his son follows him.

Later after that,the attendants of Major de Spain brought the rug at mister snopes' place because he should clean the rug, but instead he uses a sharp field stone to cut holes in it. At night he brought it back to Major de Spain's place together with Sarty. The next day Major de Spain's attendants came again to Snopes' house to tell him that he ruined the rug. To keep their just newly-got home, his wife sews it again, but in a new lawsuit, Mr. Snopes has to pay for the destroyed rug. The judge lowers the penalty to a five dollars' worth of corn. But Sarty who was with his father didn´t know what was the trial about, so he said when Abner stood in front of the court :"he didn´t burn it!" so the other people could get a suspicion.
