III. Translation (Abiturprüfung 1996 - Textaufgabe I)

Translate the following text into German:

If Charles were like so many of the 20 others who have preceded him over the centuries as Prince of Wales, he might be happy enough to serve out the Long Wait with frivolous pleasure-seeking or in endliess rounds of ceremonial ribbon-cutting. But this Prince of Wales is not like the others. Having spent most of his life this far performing royal obligations, he now sees himself as a king-in-waiting with a social conscience. Instead of merely attending to the duties of his largely ceremonial position, he desperately wants to be of service to British society and his fellow man. With almost missionary zeal, he has taken on the issue of inner-city decline and regeneration - personally heading scores of self-help projects and endlessly touring the country's improverished cities.

For all his zeal and good works, Prince Charles seems to have encountered more frustration than satisfaction in his new role. He is particularly vexed by the media, which he believes trivialize his work and his private life and show little interest in his accomplishments on behalf of the less fortunate. Charles wants to be taken seriously but his role is circumscribed by both the palace and the goverment. In a sense, he faces the problem of a modern man locked in a medieval institution. He is bound by Britain's unwritten Constitution to be non-political and he is expected by age-old tradition to be ornamental symbol.
