[Bearbeiten] Plot
Alan is hysterical and terrified after seeing Equus laughing and mocking. He asks Equus to forgive him but he only hears the answer: "Mine!...You´re mine!...I am yours and you are mine!" (p.90). Then Alan sees his rolling eyes. Nugget will see him - "always, everywhere and forever" (p.90) with his "white eyes - never closed! Eyes like flames - coming - coming!...Good seest! God seest!" (p.90)
Alan is afraid, he doesn't want this anymore - the feeling that Equus, God, has the control over him. So he takes up the invisible pick and blinds Nugget's eyes as well as two other horses, domestic ones. They stamped angrily. Three more - archetypal - horses appear looking like creatures out of a nightmare. Alan blinded them as well.
The hole square is filled with blinded horses. The horses slash their hooves and Alan tries to avoid them. At the end the noises suddenly die.
Allan collapses on the ground blinding his own eyes with the invisible pick and screams: "Find me!...Find me!...Find me!...Kill me!...Kill me!..." (p.91)
[Bearbeiten] Interpretation
It seems like there is a strong relation between Alan and Nugget. The reason why Alan is persecuted by the horse is the reason for Alan´s crime. I think there was something on his mind telling him to blind the horses. It is a never ending persecution that Alan will keep in his mind. He feels sorry for what he has done but the horses cannot let him go raping his mind all the time. He is afraid of the horses and of the terrible eyes. He blinded himself hoping never to see the horses again.
