[Bearbeiten] Plot

In scene 35 Alan awakes from his hypnotic condition and lies on the bench. Dysart promises him that "Equus" will go away and Alan will never see him again if he stays for a while. In a monologue he thinks that "Equus" will not leave easily until Hesther appears. In the end Dysart tells Hesther what he is going to do with Alan: He is able to make him free of pain and he will give Alan the good Normal world. But this would destroy his passion.

[Bearbeiten] Interpretation

In the last scene of the book Dysart blossoms out. After having seen what happened that night when Alan blinded the horses, he understood that this boy really needs his help. In the end the reader understands that Equus is not a story of the way to health of a boy but a story of a doctor who has to learn something about himself through a defenceless boy. He comprehends that he is able to help him and that this boy should have a possibility in his life to live like a normal person in a normal world. Dysart has grown mentally. At the end of the book the determination to make Alan sane has fallen and seems to begin.
