"Sartoris" passes for the first big novel by William Faulkner. The main figure Colonel Sartoris is very influenced by the great-grandfather from William Faulkner: Wiliam Cuthbert Falkner. He was engaged by the army, as politican and also as author.

In Barn Burning the main figure - Sarty - names also Colonel Sartoris. William Faukner connects his works; even when they have nothing to do with each other.
