F. Scott Fitzgerald: „The Great Gatsby“
“The Great Gatsby” is probably the most famous novel by the American Writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). The story sets in New York where the bondman Nick Carraway contracts a friendship with his neighbor, the Millionaire Gatsby. Gatsby, who was affianced with Nick’s cousin Daisy before World War I, wants – the in the meantime married – Daisy back. Gatsby tries everything to impress Daisy and to win her over – the story turns out to become dramatic.
“The Great Gatsby” shows the extravagant life of the “Jazz Age” – the 1920s. The plot was filmed several times, including the 1974-version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
The collective gravestone of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda has the last sentence of “The Great Gatsby” on it: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (German: “So regen wir die Ruder, stemmen uns gegen den Strom und treiben doch stetig zurück, dem Vergangenen zu”).
