Yoknapatawpha is a fictional county, which was created by William Faulkner. It is provided in Mississippi. The ideal of Faulkner was the Lafayette County.
1946 he drew a map of this county for the anthology “The portable Faulkner”.
Yoknapatawpha is in the north-west of Mississippi. It is ca. 2400 square miles big and in the north is the (real) river Tallahatchie and in the south the (fictive) river Yoknapatawpha. The west and the east is capped by pinewoods.
Aborginial the Chickasaw-indians lived there.
From 1800 the white people settled the land and till the civil war (1861) it was devided in plantations.
In the year 1936 there lived 15611 people. 6298 were white and 9313 black people.
